Charmaine Crowell is an alumna of San Jose State University, CA and a former member of the African American Drama Company in San Francisco. She has an extensive background in performing and directing for numerous theater companies throughout the United States. Her theater repertoire includes significant roles in productions such as For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf, God’s Trombones, A Raisin In The Sun, Home, Death and the Maiden, and North Star, among others.

Charmaine portrayed a servant in a video depicting the conclusion of the Civil War for the Appomattox Court House National Historical Park (Virginia). The video can be viewed there as part of the tour.

As a living history interpreter. She honors the legacies of figures such as Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, and Suky, Dolly Madison’s personal servant. Her performances extend to various venues, including the Valentine Museum in Richmond, Virginia, as well as schools, libraries, churches, and universities nationwide.

Charmaine also conducts artist residencies, workshops, and lecture demonstrations that explore different aspects of theater. In addition, she has showcased poetry exhibitions that highlight the works of various poets. She presents readings from her original poetry collection, “Tell Them To Call You Cactus Flower.”
​
As a modern-day griot, she shares and dramatizes stories from various African tribes.
In 2010, she was recognized as Middle School Teacher of the Year in Chesterfield County, Virginia. She currently resides in Charlottesville, Virginia.
